ANLTC Web Development Toolkit

The course is directed at library staff involved in editing and maintaining library web pages.

Library Web pages present an image of the library and provide valuable information to your users. If you have responsibility for maintaining Library web pages such as websites, subject pages, WebOPACs, blogs, wikis etc. and would benefit from useful tools to help you improve them, then this course is for you. The course will give you the skills to use freely available web based tools which will help you to enhance and develop your web presence.
The course will include hands on practical exercises. Topics to be covered
include: an overview of managing web pages, the top 10 dos and don’ts, practical tips on fonts, colours, separating design and content, using images and getting your pages noticed and used.

The second part of the course will involve practical hands on sessions on Web Development Toolkit which will utilize some of the Firefox suite of extensions for Web Development. Finally the course will include a short session on using Google Analytics on your web pages to gather usage statistics. Course notes and documentation will be distributed on the day.

LIR Annual Seminar

“Scholarly communication and the open distribution of knowledge"

The 2009 LIR Annual seminar will take place in Liberty Hall, Dublin on Friday 27th March 2009

The LIR seminar this year will be exploring the area of scholarly communication.  We intend to look at what is actually ‘free’ and how/if open source technology, enables us to deliver for free or at low cost, and if indeed this is a good and sustainable thing.  We have confirmed a number of speakers including Debby Shorley, Imperial College London, http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/people/d.shorley, David Prosser, Director SPARC Europe, http://www.sparceurope.org/about-us and Fred Friend, JISC Scholarly Communication Consultant, http://www.jisc.ac.uk/aboutus/committees/workinggroups/scholarlycomms.aspx.  As always a major emphasis at the seminar will be on developments in Irish libraries. Suggested areas for discussion are:  

·         Scholarly publication/communication models within your organisation.

·         Cheap or free sources employed in your organisation to share 'the knowledge'.

·         Experiences using/promoting the Institutional Repository/free sources that may be used to distribute knowledge.

·         How this has changed the role of the librarian.

LIN Conference 2008

The Learning Innovation Network (LIN) project is a three year collaborative project between the 13 Irish IoTs and DIT. Funded by the Strategic Innovation Fund (cycle 1) LIN is one of five stands within the project “The Institutes of Technology Sector Learning Network – Delivering Systemic Change”. This first annual LIN conference is a unique opportunity for learning and teaching experts, academics, researchers and stakeholders to come together and explore the latest issues in learning and teaching. Modularisation is now a fact of life for all Irish Institutions and the theme of "Fostering a student centred learning experience" is approached in this context. The aim of the conference is to share experiences, reflect on best practice and innovate. The conference is free to attend but please register here.
